New Book is The Bible, Metaphorically Speaking
Rising Star Press has published From Literal to Literary – The Essential Reference Book for Biblical Metaphors by James Rowe Adams. More than 150 metaphors are examined to reveal intended insights of scriptures to the skeptic and the conventional Christian. It includes an index to Hebrew and Greek words, an index of Bible citations and a pronunciation guide for transliterated Hebrew and Greek words.
A sample entry: Sin, original sin, nouns: In both the Hebrew and Greek languages, the word translated sin is based on a metaphor taken from hunting. Both the Hebrew...and the Greek...originally meant that the hunter missed what he was shooting at. The arrow fell short of the target. The sin metaphor, understood as missing the mark, can be quite useful in helping troubled people figure out where they might have gone wrong. Instead of seeing themselves as hopelessly corrupt, they can learn to accept responsibility for those actions that did not deal directly with the issue at hand...
What others say: From Marcus Borg, author of Meeting Jesus Again for the First Time and The Heart of Christianity: “An exceptionally fine book that midwives the movement from the narrowness of biblical literalism to the expansiveness of biblical literacy – a very relevant resource for recovering the rich resonances of biblical and Christian language.”
